How to Calculate Gas Usage in kWh

Quick Answer: Gas meters measure volume, not energy. To convert m³ to kWh: multiply by the calorific value (39.2 MJ/m³) × correction factor (1.02264) ÷ 3.6. For imperial ft³: multiply by 0.0283168 first to convert to m³, then apply the same formula.

The Ofgem Conversion Formula

Ofgem prescribes a standard methodology for converting gas volume to energy (kWh). This is used by all UK gas suppliers on bills. The formula uses the calorific value of gas (measuring the heat content per m³) and a correction factor for temperature and pressure.

Formula

kWh = m³ × calorific value (39.2) × correction factor (1.02264) ÷ 3.6

e.g. 100 m³ × 39.2 × 1.02264 ÷ 3.6 = 1,113 kWh

Worked Example: 100 m³ used at 6.24p/kWh

× Correction factor (1.02264)4,008.75

Your bill's calorific value may differ slightly from 39.2, use the CV on your bill for precise calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions

To convert a metric gas meter reading (m³) to kWh, use the Ofgem formula: kWh = m³ × calorific value (typically 39.2 MJ/m³) × correction factor (1.02264) ÷ 3.6. For an imperial meter (ft³), first convert to m³ by multiplying by 0.0283168, then apply the same formula. Your energy bill should show the calorific value used by your supplier.
